Continuing north up the 5 freeway to LA, meet Alan and Alexis. Click here for a photo of their pet project, their Mt. Washington house, which they really did complete themselves. Andrea and Alexis worked together at Tony Roma’s (A Place for Ribs) back in 1991. She now works for Occidental College's Community-based learning office, Alan for the MTA. We’re hoping our wedding is as pretty and successful as theirs was, back in September of 2000. Happy 5th anniversary!

Wedding Gift Registry

Hi Folks,
Andrea and I registered at Crate & Barrel and Marshal Field's.

We mean it when we say that your presence in Ecuador is all we want. But many of you have been asking for clues about what else we might use, and what the people want, the people get.
see you soon,
John

Boda Introductions; Andrew Bracken

Continuing with the introductions, but staying in San Diego:
Andrew is John’s brother, just celebrating his first anniversary in America’s Finest City. For work, he puts sound into baseball video games. He plays drums, especially samba, and has a strange knack for languages—don’t be surprised to see him bargaining in Quechua in the Otavalo market.

Boda Introduction, Betty Fry

As part of our effort to introduce you to each other before your arrival in Quito, please meet Betty Fry.
We met Betty in the course of our work with San Diego Friends of Cuba, with whom Betty has been hostess, organizer, leader, counselor, chef, artist and general source of strength and tranquility. She's a native Ohioan and was for many years a grammar school art teacher. Her travels have been extensive-- you can ask her to compare present-day Qutio with the city she saw on her last visit, circa 1960. Last month, I mentioned to her in passing our planned trip to southern Italy for our friends' wedding. She knew Puglia from a trip in the 60s I believe, and urged us to visit the trullis, the houses distinctive to the region. I, of course, had not idea.
Betty has extended her home as a refuge for many. In the summer of 1998, when Andrea and I were going through a rough patch, I spent many hours reading in her hammock, frolicking in her pool, and eating her muffins.

Dear Friends,
We hope you share our excitement about the rapidly-approaching date. Andrea and I have lived in six cities in all three coasts since we met and as a result many of you, our close friends, are strangers to each other. One of the joys of the wedding is the chance to bring you together. We're going to use the blog to jumpstart the process by introducing a few of you to each other.

This is Charles, Chuck, Drury, of San Diego. We met Chuck in 1995 in the course of our work with San Diego Friends of Cuba. Chuck's a lifelong educator, a native Chicagoan, a former merchant seaman, an never-tiring fighter for justice-- and he was our first house guest at our new place in Chicago. Every year or so, his former students, from an alternative high school, fly him out to Chicago to celebrate and thank him for his role in their lives. Chuck also has the notariety of being the companion of Betty Fry, next up in our pantheon.

Fuel Prices Push Delta To Raise Fare Caps: "Pressured by high fuel costs, Delta Air Lines Inc. yesterday raised its cap on some of its ticket prices by $100, prompting several other airlines to boost their fares.

U.S. carriers have raised fares seven times this year, the highest number of annual increases in nearly a decade. Average fares for summer and fall are up 10 to 15 percent from last year, according to airfare expert Terry Trippler of Cheapseats.com.

With fuel prices continuing to rise, more fare increases are probably coming, Trippler said. Next summer, ticket prices could be another 20 percent higher, he predicted.

'If you see a cheap fare for the holidays now, you better grab it,' Trippler said."
